INTERVIEW WITH MAX WOODWARD

Hong Kong 7’s is on route to land in Portugal, and finally get their hands in the coveted title of the Men’s Elite tournament, and Max Woodward, captain of the Asian side, granted us a special interview!

Find out with us, as the experienced player answers all our questions!

It will be Hong Kong’s third time in Vila Real de Santo António to play the Algarve 7's... are you already feeling the Sevens in the Sun vibes? What are you most looking forward to?

MW: Yes, we had training this morning after a long 30 hour journey from Hong Kong yesterday and the pitches look and feel fantastic. We are really looking forward to playing and trying to better our result from last year.

Could you tell us a bit about your team, and why we should keep an eye on you?

MW: We have a bit of a different looking team from last year, with some new players and some returning experienced players, it is a massive year for rugby in Hong Kong with the Asian Games and Olympic Qualifying tournaments coming up. Lots of pressure to perform in Asia so this is the perfect test for us.

How do you see the Hong Kong 7’s progressing forward? Do you see growth?

MW: As I mentioned, this is a hugely important year for Hong Kong rugby, we had a great performance in Hong Kong, beating Canada & Kenya comfortably and winning the shield which is our best result on the world series for a long time, so there is definitely growth and improvement happening within the team.

What are you expecting from the Algarve 7’s? Do you think it is a good tournament?

MW: The Algarve 7s is always a challenging tournament with some great invitational teams and some great 7s specialists which is always a challenge. Every game is tough and across two days in the heat it's always hard to grind out wins.

And who is Max Woodward, the Hong Kong 7’s rugby captain? What is your style of play? And what do you enjoy most about the rugby pitch?

MW: I love the challenge of 7s, the fast pace, the endurance and the contact element, especially across multiple day tournaments. I like to get stuck in and keep working hard for the team for the full 14 minutes.

Can you sum up your team in three words?

MW: Resilient, energetic & relentless

Give a shout to our fans, and explain why they should go to Vila Real de Santo António in June to see the Hong Kong 7’s team play, and maybe win the Men’s Elite division!

MW: Rugby 7s in a beautiful location and the chance to catch returning Hong Kong hero Raef Morrison on his corporate sabbatical to write himself into the history books and become an Asian Games gold medalist and Olympian in the same season
