Rugby union was played in the Former USSR as early as in 1908 and Kazakhstan had its own rugby team in the USSR.
Since its independence, Kazakhstan has been the most successful ex-Soviet rugby nation aside from Georgia and Russia with their women’s national rugby union team playing their first international against Germany in 1993. The women’s team has played in the women’s rugby World Cup 6 times with their First appearance in 1994 and their best performance was their 9th place finish in 1998 in the Netherlands with 16 teams competing. Kazakhstan is coming to the Algarve 7s to compete and prepare for the HSBC Challenger Tournament to be played in Chile later in August this year.
